Isle of Man Government, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Travelwatch Isle of Man, the Island’s Chamber of Commerce and a variety of other bodies with interests in shipping have outlined concerns about a proposed extension to the Walney Offshore Wind Farm to a public hearing of the UK Planning Inspectorate.
On 11th March, the Isle of Man Examiner included a long feature about the future of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
The User Agreement between the Isle of Man Government and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company regulates use of the Government-owned linkspan, guaranteeing near-exclusivity for that linkspan for the Steam Packet Company, and outlining the services which the ferry operator must provide for the Island. The User Agreement has had its critics, with some suggesting it creates an unfair advantage for the Steam Packet Company. However, others believe the guaranteed services it provides brings much-needed stability to what is often dubbed ‘the Island’s lifeline’. With early negotiations ongoing towards renegotiating the User Agreement, Business News spoke with Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and leading TT tour organiser Ride-on MotorTours have celebrated working together on 15 tours bringing motorcycle race fans to the home of road racing.
Rob and Dafne de Jong of Ride-on MotorTours have quite a story to tell about the Isle of Man, the TT and the Manx Grand Prix. Being keen motorcycle riders with a race history themselves, they have been visiting the Island since the early 1970s, when motorcycles were still lifted by crane from the harbour onto the vessels
Final ferry passenger figures for TT2014 show a significant increase of 7.5% in the number of motorcycles that visited the Island, making it the busiest festival since the Centenary TT in 2007.

Manannan will be operating on slightly reduced power for the remainder of the TT period after ingesting discarded fishing gear which has damaged a shaft bearing on one of her four engines.
With the damaged engine operating at reduced power, there may be some slight delays to departure/arrival times as a result of longer crossing times.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manannan is operating on reduced power after suffering a mechanical issue with one of her four engines. Berth-to-berth travel times are now expected to be around 20 minutes longer than originally scheduled depending on tidal conditions.

Following last week’s announcement that Manannan will operate on reduced power after suffering a mechanical issue with one of her four engines, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company can now confirm revised departure schedules until the engine has been repaired.
Operating on reduced power will add approximately 20 minutes to each journey. The Steam Packet Company has been monitoring the impact on services over the last few days and, despite the deployment of additional resources at the ports, running on reduced power has impacted on departure times for sailings later in the day.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has announced plans to expand the motorcycle capacity on its fast craft Manannan by 30%, which will provide the capacity for thousands of extra motorcycles during the 2015 TT.
A new mezzanine vehicle deck will be fabricated this autumn for Manannan and installed prior to each TT, accommodating an extra 300 motorcycles each way every day. It will also be installed for the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, which includes the Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix.

Staff from the Liverpool-based Carla Lane Animals in Need charity made their ‘mission of mercy’ recently and, just like last September when they first travelled over with food for the sanctuary, the Steam Packet Company was able to do its part by providing free travel.

Today’s (Sat 16 August) 0715hrs Manannan sailing from Douglas to Liverpool returned to Douglas following a medical emergency.
The incident happened 30 minutes into the crossing, and Manannan headed back to evacuate the passenger, arriving in Douglas shortly before 0900hrs, before setting off again for Liverpool.

For the recent 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Manx war hero Hector Duff travelled to Normandy, where he attended services and spent some time filming with ITV (he’s pictured here with This Morning presenter Denise Robinson). During the trip, Hector, 94, was one of 50 veterans to be awarded the French Legion d’honneur, the country’s highest accolade. Hector has spent the last 12 years visiting Manx schools, passing on his experiences to young people, as part of an initiative he started with the late Harry Bacon, and for which he was awarded the Tynwald Honour at this year’s Tynwald Day. We were only too pleased to play our small part in helping Hector reach Normandy for the anniversary, and he kindly took the time to speak to us about the trip, but also about the time he headed off to war on board a Steam Packet Company vessel, aged 19.

Isle of Man Steam Packet vessel Manannan was unable to return to Douglas last night from Liverpool due to a suspected engine electrical control system issue, which prevented one of her engines from starting.
Specialist engineers will attend the vessel in Liverpool this morning (Tuesday) and it is hoped that they will be able to find and fix the fault.

A 14-year-old Sea Cadet has spent a week at sea training on the 29-metre brig T.S. Royalist thanks to an annual sponsorship from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
Ordinary Cadet James Humphrey was the last Island Cadet to sail on T.S. Royalist, as it is being decommissioned at the end of this year and replaced by another brig.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company saw further growth in passenger numbers during the 2014 Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling.
Compared with the 2013 event, there was an 11% increase in the number of motorcycles brought to the Island during the Festival, from 3,324 to 3,697.

Isle of Man Live at Home Schemes secured a second brand-new minibus thanks to the generosity of the Isle of Man Residential Homes 2009. The Steam Packet Company arranged for the minibus to be transported from Heysham to Douglas at no charge, just as it had with the charity’s first minibus.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manannan was delayed leaving Liverpool for today’s scheduled 11:15 sailing due to a medical emergency.
A passenger was taken ill shortly before the vessel arrived in Liverpool and arrangements were made for Manannan to be met by medics so the passenger could be treated and taken to hospital by ambulance.
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is helping an ambitious cyclist as he bids to set the World Record for fastest lap of the TT Mountain course on an electric bicycle.
Mat Dibb first thought of cycling the course when he visited the TT as a foot passenger with his mountain bike in 2013. He planned to return this year, but his plans were put in doubt when he started suffering kidney problems.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company brought 14 crew members from HMS Vigilant to the Island as part of a charity challenge.
The submarine crew spent three days in the Isle of Man, cycling around the TT course, playing a friendly football match against Isle of Man Post Office and attending a reception at Douglas Town Hall. HMS Vigilant, one of four Vanguard Class Submarines which are part of the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent programme, has a long-held civic affiliation with Douglas.

The Company has announced Manannan will operate 48 additional seasonal Liverpool sailings next year. The schedule also includes extra year-round services to Heysham, as well as winter services to Birkenhead operated by Ben-my-Chree and seasonal Dublin and Belfast services.

The Curraghs Wildlife Park has welcomed a new resident with the arrival of a male Fishing Cat.
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company was delighted to assist the Park with transporting ‘Arun’, who had travelled from a zoo in Sweden. This is the latest animal transfer the Company has assisted with this year, having previously helped the Wildlife Park transport a Red Panda, Brazilian Tapir, Roul-roul Partridge, Kookaburra and pairs of Ring-tailed Lemurs and Dik-diks as part of important breeding programmes.

Schoolchildren around the Isle of Man are being treated to pioneering music lessons this week, with the visit of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s MusicLab.
The visit of the orchestra’s new mobile ‘pop-up’ musical experience – the first time it has ventured outside of mainland Britain – is part of the Island of Culture 2014 celebrations and the Steam Packet Company was delighted to support the project by shipping the MusicLab to the Island free of charge.

Once again, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company passengers dug deep when making on board donations during the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, and helped to raise a record-breaking amount.
The annual collection, which is coordinated by crew members from Ben-my-Chree and Manannan on all sailings during the festival, raised £7,802.54 for the Manx Grand Prix Supporters’ Club – the largest amount ever.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has chartered additional P&O Express sailings to assist with demand for TT 2015.
The charter has allowed the Steam Packet Company to revise its schedule and increase the number of sailings. An extra four return sailings have been added to the schedule from the Northern Irish port of Larne while Manannan will operate an additional five Liverpool returns during the TT.

Every year since 1986, a child from Austria has travelled to Bethlehem and kindled a light from the Eternal Flame inside the Church of the Nativity. The Light is then flown to Austria where it is distributed to delegations from around the world at a Service of Dedication and Distribution.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company would like to apologise once again to those passengers experiencing difficulty contacting its call centre in the wake of the disruption caused by the technical issues to Ben-my-Chree.
A fault with the vessel’s steering gear means Ben-my-Chree services have been cancelled until Wednesday, by when it is expected that repairs will have been completed.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has reduced its special offer fares for children as part of its ongoing commitment to encourage families to travel.
A child aged four to 15, whether travelling as a foot passenger or vehicle passenger, now costs from just £9 each way, down from £17. Infants, up to the age of three, still travel for free and adult foot passenger fares have been held at the same level as last year, starting at £18 each way.

Steam Packet Company engineers have now completed, and successfully tested, repairs to the Ben-my-Chree’s damaged propeller system.

One male and three female Coatis, also known as Coatimundi, were transported from Zoo De Pont Scorff in Northern France. They completed the journey to the Isle of Man with assistance from the Steam Packet Company.

The round-the-Island cruise by Manannan planned for this Sunday (March 29th) has been rescheduled to the end of April to allow the excursion to proceed in more favourable weather conditions.
The cruise will now take place on Sunday, April 26th, departing Douglas at 11:30. All passengers booked on the excursion will be automatically transferred and new tickets will be sent out. Full refunds will be given to those who cannot make the new date.

Now in its third year, the two-day festival takes place at Stone Field, Port St Mary on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th, with headline acts including The Christians and China Crisis. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manannan has suffered damage, due to the ingestion of floating debris. As a result, she is unable to reach her normal service speed and is running behind schedule. Some sailings this weekend have been rescheduled to allow time for engineers to complete repairs to the vessel when she arrives back in Douglas. Repairs are expected to take place tonight and into tomorrow morning.

Due to ongoing issues with the Manannan’s water jet system following the incident reported on Wednesday 1st April, and the thick fog throughout the Irish Sea, both today’s 15.00 sailing to Liverpool and the return 19.15 sailing from Liverpool have been cancelled.

As reported previously, Manannan suffered damage at sea last week and specialist dive teams have been trying for three nights to locate and repair the damage caused by ingestion of debris that impacted her propulsion and manoeuvring system.

A special band concert is being staged on Tuesday, May 12th to raise funds for an Isle of Man County Royal British Legion visit to Turkey to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign during World War I.
The Legion’s Dave Llewellyn is travelling to Gallipoli to attend a ceremony at the Cape Helles Memorial on April 25th and will lay wreaths and crosses at six other memorials and cemeteries. Mr Llewellyn is driving a van to Turkey to carry the wreaths and crosses and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is proud to support his journey by covering travel costs between the Isle of Man and England.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting an ambitious charity expedition which will see a Manx team attempt to drive almost 3,000 miles across Europe in six days.
Precision engineer Nick McCudden, 24, 26-year-old finance officer Mark Bangero and Craig Swan, a 22-year-old IT technician, are aiming to travel from London to Barcelona in a modified Vauxhall Astra VXR as part of the Modball Rally in June.
Don’t be alarmed if you see volunteers rescuing a whale, a dolphin and a seal pup on the beach in front of the Northern Swimming Pool in Ramsey on Sunday afternoon – they’re not real! The whale does weigh two tonnes though!
A team from British Divers Marine Life Rescue, a charity that has over 3,000 trained marine mammal medics across the UK, will be teaching around 30 volunteers how to rescue marine mammals in the first course they’ve run on the Island. The course gives the trainee medics all the basic information they need to be able to assess the condition of animals on the beach, give them first aid, handle them safely and in the case of the whale and dolphin, refloat them.

Organiser the Southern 100 Club has purchased a 171-seat mobile grandstand which will give fans greater comfort and, as it is covered, protection from the elements. The £70,000 needed to buy the grandstand was raised through donations and from Club funds.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company completed more than 3,300 bookings for travel to the 2016 TT festival in just 10 hours, an increase of 33% on last year.
The Company started taking reservations on Monday, 1st June, and by 6.30pm more than 8,800 passengers had been booked to travel. The number of bookings is substantially higher than the same day in 2014, which was in itself a record.

A regular TT visitor and fan of the event, Charley will be hosting Charley Boorman Live on 9th June. It is a chance to hear about his life and career, as well as what he thinks about the TT. His last Gaiety show, two years ago, was a sell out and this year’s is set to be just as successful.

The number of motorcycles carried to the 2015 Isle of Man TT by the Steam Packet Company was up 16.6% compared with last year.
The total, which increased from 2014 figures by 2,002 to 14,055, is the most motorcycles carried in any year other than 2007’s centenary celebrations. The rise was due to the Company’s decision to introduce a removable mezzanine deck on Manannan, creating space for more bikes, and invest in the charter of MV Arrow to provide freight cover so both Ben-my-Chree and Manannan had room for TT fans.

The Steam Packet Company has returned a school science project which crash-landed in the Isle of Man to the pupils of St Andrew's Academy in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
The students launched the helium-filled weather balloon on Tuesday, expecting it to land in Dumfriesshire. Instead, the balloon, which carried a capsule fitted with a GPS tracking device, drifted out over the Irish Sea and was feared lost.

The P&O Express fast craft will not be joining the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company fleet during the 2016 TT.
The vessel has been a regular in Manx waters for Larne trips each TT, but the craft is being returned to her owners by P&O and will not be available for TT charter trips in 2016. Finding a suitable alternative which is available for such a short lease period is proving very difficult, so the Steam Packet Company has already adjusted its TT schedules for next year to maximise capacity.

The Steam Packet Company is bringing six injured former servicemen to the Isle of Man to experience a road racing event as part of a rehabilitation charity’s work.
Letsdo was formed by Rob Maxwell and Steve Timblin, who both underwent limb amputations following injuries sustained while serving in the British Army, with the aim of bringing other injured servicemen and women together. It is hoped that former armed forces personnel living with life-changing injuries will benefit through group activities and taking trips together, coming to terms with their injuries and finding new confidence.

Work by the former Courtyard Gallery Artist in Residence will be displayed at the Isle Gallery in Tynwald Mills, St John’s, for four weeks from 13th September. The Steam Packet Company has agreed to transport the artwork for the exhibition to and from the Island for free.
This will be Julie Anne’s first solo exhibition in the Isle of Man since she moved to Zurich, Switzerland, in 2009. Since then, she has been working as an artist and designer, lecturing and exhibiting across Europe, and has won a series of prestigious prizes.

Fast craft Manannan will stay in Manx waters until at least the end of the year, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has confirmed.
The vessel concludes her 2015 season on 8th November and is not due to resume sailings until 17th March 2016. Normally Manannan would be moored in the Mersey during the winter, however this year she will stay in Douglas.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is helping the Riders Branch of the Royal British Legion attend this year’s Isle of Man Remembrance services.
Members of the national branch have been invited to the services to be held in Douglas, Castletown and St John’s between 6th and 8th November. They will be guests of the Royal British Legion Isle of Man County and will join veterans, standard bearers and cadets at the services.

A group of Year 6 pupils from Castletown’s Victoria Road Primary School were welcomed on board Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manannan as part of a school project.
Class teacher Suzanne O'Reilly arranged for the 10 and 11-year-olds to tour the fast craft while she was in Douglas harbour between sailings. They were shown around the vessel by Captain John Pirrie and Passenger Services Assistant Stacey Murphy.

A record-breaking amount has been raised for the Manx Grand Prix Supporters’ Club thanks to donations from Isle of Man Steam Packet Company passengers.
As usual, crew members on Ben-my-Chree and Manannan conducted on-board collections on all sailings during the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, with hopes last year’s record-breaking total could be topped.

Luc joined the quayside team in Douglas in 2002 and worked with the Steam Packet Company until his death in December last year, aged 51. He is survived by his wife Marie, their two children and a stepson.
