Local martial arts academy sails to victory

7/5/2019

A local martial arts academy travelled to the UK to take part in the Taekwondo England International Spring Open Championships 2019, supported by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.

Flying Phoenix Taekwondo, which teaches martial arts and self-defence to all ages on the Isle of Man, sent a team of representatives to compete at George H Carnall Leisure Centre in Manchester on 27th-28th April.

Over the course of the two-day championships, competitors could choose to participate in a number of traditional Taekwondo categories, including poomsae and kyrougi.

With some of the world’s finest Taekwondo competitors from all over the globe preparing for the competition, Flying Phoenix Taekwondo competed against experienced national teams of the highest level from England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Poland, Jordan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company was pleased to offer its support to the club by assisting with the cost of return travel for the competitors and their coaches.

Christopher Guzman, senior instructor from Flying Phoenix Taekwondo, said: ‘Without the support of the Steam Packet Company, fewer competitors would have been able to attend the trip and represent the island. The club, including the competitors, parents and guardians, are very grateful.’

Flying Phoenix Taekwondo had a very successful trip and brought home seven gold trophies, two silver trophies and three bronze medals.

One young competitor also received a gold trophy for best fighter, and another was awarded to senior instructor Christopher for his hard work and dedication to the martial art.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward added: ‘We’re pleased to once again offer our support to Flying Phoenix Taekwondo as they compete in the England International Spring Open Championships 2019. It’s a fantastic opportunity to compete at this level and represent the island and we hope they enjoyed the two day event.’
