Steam Packet Company provides pedal power for Gran Fondo Isle of Man

19/7/2019

With just two days to go until Gran Fondo Isle of Man, hundreds of cyclists of all ages and abilities are gearing up for one of the highlights of the Manx cycling calendar year, supported once again by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.

Taking place this Sunday (21st July), the action-packed sporting event comprises of four separate cycling challenges, starting and finishing at Mooragh Park in Ramsey. That includes the gruelling 85-mile Gran Fondo, which takes place on largely closed roads, the 40-mile Medio Fondo for recreational riders, the 20-mile Piccolo Fondo for families and beginners and the Minisculo Fondo, a half-mile circuit in and around Mooragh Park aimed at children and families.

Competitors will be followed around the 85-mile circuit by two service vehicles, provided by event sponsor The Hubb, which will offer assistance and equipment for riders that suffer mechanical issues during the race. The Steam Packet Company has offered its support by providing free of charge travel for one of the service vehicles, which travelled to the island this week ahead of the event.

Paul Phillips, Event Director of Gran Fondo Isle of Man, commented: ‘We are very grateful to the Steam Packet Company for facilitating the delivery of one of the UK-based service vehicles, and of course to The Hubb for offering the use of its cars. Both have been integral in helping us to deliver a professional and positive experience for all of our Gran Fondo competitors.

‘After many months of preparation, the time has finally come for this year’s event which promises to be another exhilarating day of racing. It’s going to be punishing 85 miles with steep climbs and tricky terrain throughout, but excitement is certainly building and we’re looking forward to seeing the many strong contenders take to the circuit, including local professional and Team WIGGINS Le Col rider Mark Christian.’

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘Gran Fondo Isle of Man is a great community event with something for the whole family to enjoy. The service vehicles are an important aspect of the highly anticipated Gran Fondo race, so we’re pleased to offer our support and help them arrive safely on the island.’

Road closure details for this Sunday’s Gran Fondo Isle of Man can be found on the event website: www.granfondoiom.com.
