Summer soccer fun to return for island youngsters

10/6/2019

A week-long professional soccer camp awaits young Manx footballers this summer.

League Two football club Morecambe has once again teamed up with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to bring its camp to the island for the third successive year.

Coaches from Morecambe FC Academy will return to Ramsey Youth Centre and Old Boys FC from 29th July until 2nd August, to deliver a programme for footballers aged six-14 years.

Since the partnership began in Easter 2017, the club’s Academy has been inundated with requests to return.

Head of Youth Stewart Drummond said: ‘It’s great to be coming back to the Isle of Man. We’ve received a warm welcome from our hosts on previous visits and I’m sure this time it will be the same.

‘Our Academy coaches have always found a great enthusiasm for sport on the Isle of Man and the young Manx footballers are hard-working and willing to learn.

‘We’ve built up some good contacts in the island in recent years and been able to invite a number of players over to trial with us. That is definitely something we want to build upon, whilst at the same time providing a fun week for all those who love the game.’

The Shrimps’ coaches will help players develop their skills, with a programme focusing on technical and tactical aspects. The sessions will be designed for all abilities and will be delivered by UEFA and FA qualified staff from the Academy.

Stewart added: ‘As an Academy, we’ve carried out a lot of work in the last few years to extend our player recruitment network and look far and wide in the search for talent.

‘It is hoped that for the most talented young footballers, we can offer a possible pathway into the Academy and ultimately a scholarship with the Club.’

The Steam Packet Company is once again supporting the camp by covering the cost of travel to and from the Isle of Man.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward added: ‘We are pleased to continue our support for Morecambe FC Academy.

‘These camps provide opportunities for young local footballers to benefit from qualified coaching and, who knows, maybe pursue a pathway to a scholarship with the club’s Academy.

‘I am sure it will be another rewarding experience for all concerned.’
