JAPANESE TAIKO DRUMMERS TO VISIT THE ISLE OF MAN WITH STEAM PACKET COMPANY SUPPORT

A taiko drumming ensemble will perform at the Gaiety Theatre in October with support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.

Mugenkyo Taiko, which translates to limitless reverberation, mixes traditional Japanese drumming with contemporary choreography to create an energetic performance.

The group was established in 1994 by Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams after training with Masaaki Kurumaya Sensei in Japan. Today they work to preserve and share the taiko art form by running workshops and masterclasses as well as arranging concert tours. 

Dawn Maddrell, General Manager at the Villa Marina and Gaiety Theatre, said: ‘We are delighted to have a show which offers audiences an opportunity to experience a different culture perform at the Gaiety Theatre. Transporting the taiko drums is not an easy task as each drum is more than a metre wide, we are tremendously grateful to the Steam Packet Company for assisting with the cost of transporting all the large instruments and stage props required for the show.’

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward added: ‘The Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers promise to deliver a unique experience for the Island audience and we’re pleased to be able to assist the Gaiety Theatre continue to provide a diverse programme of events.’
