Having operated on the Irish Sea since 1830, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has long understood that its people are key to the success of the business. Through thick and thin the Steam Packet Company has provided a vital service to the Isle of Man, transporting goods and passengers in and out of the island in all seasons.

Locations

IOMSPC has its headquarters in Douglas, Isle of Man, in Imperial Buildings, located on the edge of the Harbour estate. It also maintains a Ferry Travel Shop and freight office within the Isle of Man's iconic Sea Terminal.

The Company's workshops are also located near the port in Douglas, from where the engineering team help maintain the vessels in the fleet. 

Heysham and Liverpool terminals are manned all-year round by full-time staff, but in the busier summer months there are openings for seasonal roles.

Vessels

The Steam Packet Company currently operates a fleet of two vessels in full-time service:

Manxman joined the fleet in 2023. It is the first vessel purpose built for the Company since 1998. The diesel-hybrid conventional RoPax was purpose-built for the needs of the Heysham-Isle of Man route. Packed with cutting-edge technology, Manxman is also designed for crew comfort and efficient working.

Manannan is a fast RoPax catamaran built to high speed craft standards by Incat Tasmania. Operating seasonally from Douglas, Manannan primarily serves Liverpool but also visits Dublin, Heysham and Belfast.

Roles ashore

It takes a huge number of personnel in a wide range of roles to make sure there is a boat sailing to and from the Isle of Man at least twice a day, all year except Christmas Day.

Roles at Sea

Full-time roles on board the Steam Packet Company vessels range from Apprentice Deck Rating to Master, with most ranks in between.
