Christmas is coming to Douglas on a Saturday this year, giving you even more reason to turn the festive lights switch-on into a winter getaway.
For the first time, the island’s capital will host its annual celebration on Saturday 21st November 2026, with a full day of festive activities building up to the evening’s big moment. It’s the perfect excuse to escape for a few days, browse independent shops, discover traditional Manx Christmas events and enjoy the island.
From the streets of Douglas to the harbour in Peel and the village charm of Laxey, there’s plenty to fill a Christmas break on the Isle of Man without the crowds and bustle of a big-city getaway. Here are some of the events and experiences to put on your winter itinerary.
Saturday 21 November 2026
Make Douglas’s Christmas lights switch-on the centrepiece of your festive short break. While it’s traditionally taken place on a Thursday evening, the celebrations are moving to a Saturday for the first time. The new all-day format means there’s more opportunity to enjoy the town centre before the lights illuminate the streets in the evening.
This means you can spend the day browsing the shops, enjoying warming drinks and soaking up the festive atmosphere as the capital gets ready for Christmas. Then find a good spot for the switch-on and enjoy the spectacle as the decorations bring some extra sparkle to Douglas.
With a whole Saturday to enjoy, this is an excellent starting point for a weekend exploring the island’s other festive attractions.
Peel’s Yuletide Festival is another event to look out for if you love a traditional, community-focused Christmas celebration. The festival has brought together Manx craft markets, Christmas carols and the chance for younger visitors to meet Santa, creating a lovely excuse to spend time in the island’s historic west-coast town.
After browsing the stalls and enjoying the entertainment, take a stroll around Peel’s harbour or explore its independent shops and cafés. With its seaside setting and welcoming atmosphere, Peel offers a different feel from the capital and makes a rewarding addition to a festive break. It’s also only 25 minutes by road from Douglas.
The dates for 2026 have yet to be confirmed, so keep an eye out as we approach Christmas.
Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November 2026
For handmade gifts, local produce and a proper village Christmas atmosphere, head to Laxey for its annual Christmas Market. Taking place across the 21st and 22nd of November, the festive fayre is set to feature more than 100 stalls across two days, with Christmas cards, crafts, gifts and seasonal treats to browse.
There’s plenty for families to enjoy, too, including a visit from Santa, festive entertainment and the chance to explore the village as local shops join in the celebrations. When you need a break from shopping, the market’s café is a tempting stop for homemade cakes and something warming.
Getting there can be part of the fun. The Manx Electric Railway runs from Douglas to Laxey, and while the main season for the railway ends in early November, there is a special weekend of festive trams running specifically for the weekend of the Laxey Village Christmas Market!
With the market taking place on the same weekend as the Douglas lights switch-on, you could enjoy two very different sides of the island, with the Manx Electric Railway being your sleigh.
Thursday 3 and Friday 4 December 2026
If live entertainment is more your style, Manannan’s Winterfest brings a distinctive Manx flavour to the festive season. Held at Douglas’s beautiful Gaiety Theatre, this special concert celebrates Christmas traditions through classical, folk, brass and choral music, with a sprinkling of local humour and theatrical fun. Performances are scheduled for 7:30pm on both evenings.
It’s a wonderful way to spend an evening during a December break, whether you’re travelling with friends, planning a couple’s escape or looking for something a little different from the usual Christmas outing. The mix of musical styles makes the event a celebration of the island’s cultural character, so it gives visitors a great sense of Manx identity.
At Peel Golf Club, MANXMAS – Christmas Market on the Links is scheduled for Sunday 15th November, from 11am to 5pm. This new festive tradition will bring together local craftspeople, independent businesses and food producers, with festive food and drink, family photo opportunities and seasonal entertainment. It’s a good option for anyone who wants to support local businesses while finding something more individual to put under the tree – it’s also free to attend and has free parking.
Peel also hosts Christmas Hygge with Artreach Studios, listed for 20th-22nd November. You can expect an artisan market, handcrafted gifts, local artwork and gourmet treats, with a Friday evening launch that offers a chance to browse after dark.
There are lots of other things you can do on the Isle of Man outside of Christmas events – you can wrap up warm and take a walk around Peel’s harbour, where the sea air and views make a refreshing change from the bustling shopping streets. Or head into the countryside around Laxey, where the winding lanes and the surrounding hills offer a quieter side to the island. Keep an eye on the forecast and daylight hours, and save your longer walks for suitable conditions.
For a gentler afternoon, settle into a local café for coffee and cake, or find a welcoming pub for a leisurely lunch. Douglas is a handy place to combine shopping with a little festive indulgence, while Peel is ideal for an unhurried wander around the waterfront.
There’s plenty for culture lovers, too. The island’s museums and heritage attractions offer a way to discover Manx history when the weather turns, while the Gaiety Theatre’s winter entertainment gives you a reason to dress up for an evening out.
The best way to make the most of the island’s festive calendar is to plan around the events that appeal to you most. If you’re keen to catch the Douglas Christmas lights switch-on or visit Laxey’s Christmas Market, the weekend of 21st-22nd November is an obvious choice. For a December trip with a musical highlight, consider travelling around Manannan’s Winterfest on 3 or 4 December.
