In addition to watchkeeping duties, the Second Officer is the Ship’s Navigational Officer and responsible to the Master for ensuring that all relevant charts, light lists, tide tables and publications are on board and kept corrected up to date – including ECDIS and other electronic updates as appropriate.  Requisitions for new publications/updates must be countersigned by the Master. See ‘Second Officer – Correction of Charts & Nautical Procedures’.

The Second Officer is responsible to the Master for the correct operation of all Navigation Aids – Radars/ECDIS, Echo Sounder, Speed Log, GPS, Bridge Clocks, VHF Radio, AIS Transponder, Gyro and Magnetic Compasses.

The Second Officer will be responsible for preparing the Passage Plans (See SOLAS CH.V)

The Second Officer shall maintain Hours of Rest schedules for the deck department when directed to do so by the Chief Officer.

The Second Officer is responsible to the Master for ensuring the Log Abstract is maintained up to date as per the requirements of CSOOPM 5.1.

The Second Officer will undertake duties of Loading Officer when required to do so by the Chief Officer.

The Second Officer is appointed to examine the Cargo Securing Gear (See Cargo Securing Manual).

The Second Officer will assist the Chief Officer, in the training of personnel in duties listed on the Muster List, and assist with emergency/lifeboat drill duties as directed by the Master.

The Second Officer will carry out such work as may be delegated by the Chief Officer.

The Second Officer will have responsibility for ensuring that statutory medical scales are compiled with and adequate medical supplies and equipment are available to meet the needs of passengers and crew. The Second Officer will also be required to co-operate with the PSO to ensure the upkeep of the ship’s 1st Aid room in a clean and tidy condition and ensure its readiness for immediate use.

Where no Third Officer is on board the Second Officer shall fulfil the responsibilities of the Third Officer.

The Second Officer is responsible to the Master for the correct operation of the following equipment:

1.     Ship Radio (GMDSS) equipment

2.     Ship internal communications equipment including portable ‘walky-talky’ sets, and for electronic navigational aids including ECDIS, radar, echo sounder and GPS

The Second Officer will be responsible for issuing and maintaining personal protective clothing stock on board by monitoring stock levels, issuing and recording personal protective clothing issued to seafarers, and ordering replacement personal protective clothing stores as may be required.

Key Competencies:

• STCW, including medical first aid

•  Must have UK right to work 

• CO License (Desirable)
