Manxman UpdateThe Second Engineer Officer is responsible to the Chief Engineer Officer for the safe and efficient running of the machinery. He must inform the Chief Engineer immediately of any unusual conditions in the machinery spaces, which he may see or which have been reported by other engine room personnel.
They must be fully conversant with the safe operation of ships machinery, firefighting and safety equipment.
They should ensure that the Engine Room is kept clean and tidy and that discipline is maintained, according to the Chief Engineer’s instructions and Company Code of Conduct, with particular reference to safety of operations and manning.
Safekeeping of Engine Room stores and spare parts are your responsibility. They should carefully monitor the rate of usage ensuring that stores are used as economically as possible and liaise with the Chief Engineer Officer accordingly.
The Second Engineer or if they are not available then the Engineer Officer on watch is to ensure that prior to taking fuel onboard, bunker filling valves are shut and blanks fitted, in the station not in use. When bunkering is complete they are to ensure that all filling valves are closed and blanks are refitted.
In multi-crew ships the Second Engineer Officer in conjunction with the Chief Engineer is responsible for organising the cleaning and work routines so that each crew plays a full part in maintaining the vessel to the Company’s requirements and implement maintenance according to Chief Engineer’s instructions.
Responsible for maintenance of equipment and control of spares and consumables as assigned to them in the C/E’s Standing Orders.
Key Competencies:
STCW, including medical first aid
Must have UK right to work
