There’s something special about the moment when the big top goes up, a signal that the well-loved Gandeys Circus has arrived on the island, bringing colour, excitement, and world-class entertainment for all ages.
With over 100 years of history, Gandeys Circus is one of the UK’s most established circus families, blending traditional circus heritage with modern production. From breathtaking aerial performances to high-energy acrobatics and moments of comedy, this year’s ‘K-Pop Dragon Circus’ show, which gets underway on March 19 to 29 at Nobles Park, promises a spectacular experience for audiences of all ages.
Bringing a production of this scale to an island location comes with unique logistical challenges, which is where support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company plays an important role. Through our Manx Community Assistance Scheme (MCA), we have supported Gandeys travel to and from the island since 2019. Our tradition of supporting the local community spans over a century, and through the MCA Scheme we support local events, charities and groups that enhance the quality of life of residents and make a positive impact on the Isle of Man.
Transporting a small travelling city
While audiences see the epic shows under the big top at Gandeys, what many don’t see is the incredible effort it takes to bring a travelling circus to the island. Touring with Gandeys is no small feat. The show travels with dozens of performers and crew from around the world, alongside a convoy of vehicles transporting everything from the big top itself to seating, staging, lighting, technical equipment, and living accommodation.
As the team explains, moving the circus is “like transporting a small travelling city”, with each stop requiring careful planning, coordination and a dedicated team working behind the scenes to rebuild the entire show from the ground up.
“Every stop involves transporting large amounts of equipment, coordinating travel schedules and rebuilding the show from the ground up”, the team said.”It takes careful planning and coordination to ensure everything arrives safely and is ready for opening night, and it takes a highly experienced team working behind the scenes to make it all happen.”
“The Steam Packet plays a vital role in helping us bring the circus to the Isle of Man,” Gandeys said. “Transporting a production of this scale requires moving a large team and a convoy of equipment, so their support ensures everything arrives smoothly and on schedule so we can bring the magic of the circus to audiences.”
A special stop on the tour
The Isle of Man has long been a key destination on Gandeys’ touring calendar, with the team always receiving a warm welcome from local audiences.
“The Isle of Man is always a very special stop for us,” they said. “The scenery is beautiful, the community is incredibly welcoming and audiences bring such fantastic energy to every performance.”
For this year’s performance, audiences can expect a thrilling, high-energy show packed with breathtaking acrobatics, daring aerial acts, incredible K-pop routiness and plenty of comedy along the way. It’s a fast-paced family spectacle with stunning costumes, great music and moments that will leave people on the edge of their seats. Leading the adventure is the charismatic Ringmaster Joel, joined by his mischievous clown companion, La Loka. Their journey begins when they discover a baby dragon, and together, they embark on a heartwarming quest to reunite the young dragon with her majestic mother, guarded by the noble dragon riders.
For island residents and visitors alike, Gandeys Circus is a chance to experience world-class live entertainment right on your doorstep, and a reminder of the important role connectivity plays in bringing events like this to the island.
Gandeys K-Pop Dragon Circus will run from Thursday, March 19 to Sunday, March 29 at Nobles Park.
