Isle of Man Steam Packet Company welcomes the Sound of Music

30/1/2020

Support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is music to the ears of Douglas Choral Union (DCU), which will bring the Manx hills alive with ‘The Sound of Music’ next month.

DCU has received discounted ferry travel to transport show costumes and the set to and from the Island, which will be assembled at the Gaiety Theatre ahead of the first performance on Friday 14th February.

One of the world’s most popular musicals, The Sound of Music features many recognisable songs such as ‘So Long Farewell’, ‘Do-re-mi’ and ‘My Favourite Things’. The famous story of the Von Trapps and their governess, Maria, will be told by an all-local cast, including many young people.

Tony Jones, chairman of Douglas Choral Union, said: ‘Thank you to the Steam Packet Company for its generosity and help in getting the set to the Island, its support makes a huge difference. Most people are familiar with The Sound of Music, even if it’s just the music that they recognise, and we know that people of all ages will appreciate the heart-warming story.

‘Rehearsals are well underway and excitement is building among the cast, particularly for the younger members, some of who will be performing on the Gaiety Theatre stage for the very first time! Tickets are available from the Villa Gaiety Box Office now, so don’t delay in getting yours.’

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward added: ‘As a proud supporter of the Island’s thriving arts scene, we’re pleased to be able to help bring this wonderful musical to the Gaiety Theatre stage. The quality of local productions is truly excellent and I’m sure Douglas Choral Union will uphold its high standards.’
