ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY AND ATHOL CAR HIRE SUPPORT ISLAND GAMES

23/6/2009

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and Athol Car Hire are supporting the Island Games by helping to deliver the Manx team’s sporting equipment.

The team’s two vans were transported to Heysham by the Ben-my-Chree on Sunday as part of the 1,500 mile journey to Aland, in the Baltic East of Stockholm.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: “The Island Games is a major sporting event for local competitors and their equipment is vital, so we were more than happy to provide the transportation for the vans.”

David Quayle, of Athol Car Hire, said: “Once again we are pleased to assist the Athletes with their transportation requirements as we did to Shetland in 2005 and we wish the Island Team every success.”

Island Games Association of Mann Secretary Jill Gillings said: “Our team is 214 strong and has entered each of the 13 sports; archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, judo, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and tennis.

“The team departs on Friday 26th June, but in advance of that two vans will be driven to Aland carrying our sports equipment. We are really appreciative of the kindness of the Steam Packet Company for providing the two return tickets for both vans to England and to Athol Car Hire for supplying the vans. Every saving made helps each member of the team by reducing their costs, so thank you from all of us.”
