IOMSPC Support Junior Achievement with off-Island Charity Trek

13/4/2022

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company are supporting local charity, Junior Achievement, with its charity fundraising trek in Spain taking place this month.

A group of 29 fundraisers are currently taking part in the trek to help raise funds for the charity, which helps young people develop the essential workplace skills required after leaving full time education. The charity, which works in every primary and secondary school on the Island, supports 5,000 young people on an annual basis.

The Steam Packet Company has subsidised participants’ return ferry travel to and from the Island, for when the group departed for Northern Spain, where they are taking on 115km of walking. The group will follow the El Camino de Santiago – or Way of St James; a world heritage site, and one of the oldest walking routes in the world. Originally scheduled to take place in October 2019, the charity trek will take five days to complete.

Brian Thomson, Managing Director of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, said: ‘We are pleased to support Junior Achievement and their fundraising team in their journey across Northern Spain. The work the charity carries out across the Island enables so many of our young people to learn important life skills that will prove invaluable when entering the working world. We wish the team all the best on their fundraising venture’

Sue Cook, CEO of Junior Achievement, added: ‘I would like to thank the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for their kind support – I know it means a lot to the trekkers who have had a difficult few months of fundraising. After being rescheduled several times due to the pandemic, it’s been wonderful to see so many people come forward and put their walking shoes on!

‘Our charity provides real life experiences to a broad spectrum of young people across the Isle of Man, allowing them to gain confidence and communication skills through a range of workshops which are supported by a team of over 200 business volunteers. These are provided without charge to the Island’s schools, all thanks to public donations and fundraising initiatives like this.’
