Introducing Manxman artists: Bruno Cavellec

Known for his mastery of printmaking, digital art and now music, Bruno returns to his beloved oil paints for this piece.

Oil painting, printmaking, digital art and music.

4. What medium will you be using for this commission?

Oil painting.

5. Where on the Island do you live/what is your connection to the Island?

I live in Peel. Creativity through art and music is my main connection to the Island.

6. What kind of piece are you producing for this commission?

A large oil painting featuring the Milky Way and the Dark Skies of the Isle of Man.

7. What do you consider to be your biggest artistic achievement to date?

One of my paintings was chosen to feature on Scott Matthews’s second album cover. Not only do I love his music but the album was also released on Island Records, which gave considerable exposure to the artwork.

8. Which of your past works might people most easily recognise?

Probably the most moody, atmospheric pieces featuring silhouettes under big skies.

9. What is your main source of inspiration?             

Life experiences, definitely.

10. What do you love about the medium you’re using for this commission/why has this medium been selected?

Oil painting is an exceptionally versatile medium, its endless possibilities allow me to experiment as much as I want.

11. What do you hope to convey to passengers through this piece?

A sense of space, natural beauty and pride to live on the Isle of Man.

12. When you travel by Steam Packet ferry, where do you love to visit/what happy memories do you have of visits you’ve made by Steam Packet ferry (perhaps even the feeling of coming home!)?

A day trip to Liverpool is always one I look forward to. It’s also special to take the ferry on my way home to Brittany.
